Observation Narrative
A saturated woodland community occupying oligotrophic, sphagnous swales and flats with abundant groundwater seepage. Recent selective logging has created open canopy conditions and favorable conditions for a number of light demanding species, perhaps replicating to some degree the conditions in frequently burned, wet savanna of the presettlement landscape in SE Virginia. Very dense, closed forest vegetation occurs in uncut portions of the swamp. It is floristically similar, but has a much less diverse shrub layer consisting largely of Clethra alnifolia, Magnolia virginiana, Viburnum nudum and Smilax laurifolia; and a depauperate herbaceous layer consisting largely of Carex collinsii, Carex lonchocarpa and Mitchella repens.
Plot location: Along a seepage rill just south of a powerline ca. 3 km north of junction VA route 35 and route 627, just southeast of Sussex/Prince George County line.
